is /home on a separate partition?  Could you copy them into that?  If
not, and if they fit on a floppy, you can easily mount a floppy and copy
them like that (and in fact , you should be able to to do both for
maximal safety).  Can you mount a floppy via "mount /dev/fd0
/mnt/floppy"?   

You may like to use gzip to compress them first.  Try "gzip filename"
first.
