I'd definitely recommend Samba as the simplest approach for
working with windows boxes. For a home network you probably
don't need any authentication on the Samba shares and that's
the main thing that makes setup tricky.
NFS does make sense for Linux to Linux but it's not exactly
mainstream for sharing files with Windows. It also won't
help with sharing printers which Samba can do.
