You may find:
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/base/kernel-image-2.6.0-test1-1-386.html
to be a useful way of going about it, if you're running Debian. Even
if not, downloading the corresponding package source:
http://ftp.nz.debian.org/debian/pool/main/k/kernel-image-2.6.0-test1-i386/kernel-image-2.6.0-test1-i386_2.6.0-test1-1.tar.gz
May provide some useful tips on how to build (have a look at config/386
and config/default in that archive for configs; unfortunately it seems
everything else uses make-kpkg to build, which won't be available on
non Debian systems).
