I am thinking it only requires mounting the removable storage in order to access is but cannot work out how to do that. Its describes itself as a SCSI emulation whatever the significance of that in fstab perhaps?

Here's a couple of things you could try. I'm not sure but keen to help
out if I can.
My Sony camera uses usb mass storage and was recognised under rh9 right
off the bat. I use the following steps:
1. Plug in camera and turn it on
2. RedHat Menu->System Tools->Disk Management
3. Select camera from the listbox
4. Click the Mount button
A nautilus icon appears on the desktop linked to the camera. To unmount
the camera I have to right click on the desktop icon and select "Unmount
volume". Using the disk management tool reports "device is busy".
If this doesn't work you could try connecting the camera then rebooting.
Kudzu may need to detect your camera to setup mount points and device
entries.
Good luck!
