Debian is the OS is 'love' , but I have to concede that SuSE has the 
best hardware detection I know. 

I often use Knoppix or SuSE to check the Hardware and install 
Debian after that. I does not work all time but most of it.

If have read that someone in NZLUG have some SuSE CD's , so you maybe 
can get a copy and try it...
