Small advance hint: it is crucial that any alternatives are easily
understood by volunteers who may not have the opportunity to be properly
trained.  According to Amnesty, that's why they made the change from
Word Perfect to MS Word some years ago - not because Word was better,
but because it was understood by people Amnesty depends heavily on.  
I'm not saying I agree with this, but merely suggesting that any
solutions are packaged to recognise and address this key point :-)
