Some further thoughts. Esp as I've had a few emails from likely purchasers:
I've emailed Mandrakesoft regarding:
1. Me as a computer dealer getting a local distributorship, so maybe I could
offer MandrakeClub like discounts to LUG members (depends on pricing
structures)
2. LUG & installfest options for discount purchases.
The first is more likely to be a hassle than good business, but on the scale I
enjoy working (SMALL!!) it could provide some local & immediate access to
commercial Mandrake products. This on any scale does provide more credibility,
but really I have enough on my plate without this.
Mandrakesoft do have direct relationships with LUG's. If there is an option
there which can provide a benefit for WLUG members, some level of fundraising
for WLUG & support Mandrakesoft it would be preferable. If any LUG in NZ is
gonna look at this I'd like it to be WLUG (some personal bias there).
Re the club discounts (in a bulk order through me), they could apply for other
MC members & not for others. My main goal is to cut the freight component down,
which can be over US$30 per parcel.
I know DSE are selling PC's with ML installed, but they seem to be a ML OEM,
not reseller. I'll be surprised if some commercial business doesn't take on an
NZ or Australasian reseller role in the short to medium term. I'd like to see
this opportunity taken up by someone in the Linux/OSS arena instead.
There are several to many businesses/individuals providing the freely
distributable versions, but nowhere I know of locally selling the commercial
offerings. To me, this offers Mandrakesoft better support than simply being a
club member.
I guess it could require a more formally constituted WLUG??
Comments anyone :-)
