While I'm thinking of it, Firebird (Open Source Interbase) is a very solid 
embedded database. Its not GPL, so you won't have any legal difficulties in 
distribution.

Downside is that isn't slower in my experience. I moved from Interbase to 
Postgres. I have used Interbase from my Delphi days, and its okay for small 
numbers of users. It also had some recursive plans possible - so a complex 
query would go to 100% CPU and stay there. Not sure if that was worked out.

However, Interbase/Firebird is still quite nice for a simple to install, 
comprehensive DB. License is the Interbase Public License, and if memory 
serves this is similar to the Mozilla Public License.
