[wellylug] Installfest - NOTICE

Colin, I have copied this post to the new NZ hosted list so that those
people who have unsubscribed from this old list might see it. I would have
hoped everyone was gone from Yahoo now as the list will be closed soon (once
I find a way to halt the list and still allow old material to be browsed).
Considering that we had twice the number of people show interest in Debian
that have shown interest in RedHat I would consider it quite silly if you
didn't allow Debian (given that it is still considered the more 'pure' of
the Linux distros).
I take your point about infrastructure and will not bother bringing a switch
and will hope that the provided network will allow for the number of ports
we might need for installs etc.Might I suggest though that it would have
been nicer to see a post on the list advising of what is available at the
venue in the way of network ports, power etc rather than the rather terse
response in your email.
It is also my view that if you are not going to cater to anyone but absolute
'newbies' (I hate that term!) then this should have been made clear from the
outset and then perhaps those of us who have put the effort into getting
distro's such as Debian to have available locally would not have bothered.
There is a damn site more to Linux than Knoppix, Mandrake (whom I don't
think will survive their current cash crisis), RedHat and SME (which I for
one have never heard of).
These are my opinions and my opinions only and they do not constitute a view
of the Wellylug group as a whole.

Subject: [wellylug] Installfest - NOTICE
The Wellington Installfest is, as has been advised, an opportunity for
people who do not know Linux well to come and gain some appreciation of
it.
Silicon Systems have provided the venue and infrastructure - Do not bring
your own!
We, the organizing committee, have specified only certain distributions -
Knoppix, Mandrake, Red Hat, and SME. We will allow Debian if necessary,
but
no more than that. It is too confusing for everyone including the
supporters.
We have offers for demonstrations of certain items - Natcoll has offered
to
support this, and we have a flash introduction to Open Office. We have
limited space in this area so no more offers accepted please.
Gaming - lovely idea, and we MAY be able to accommodate you in the build
area - unless it gets too busy! You are optional - thank you. I recommend
that you suggest a normal meeting night at LAN Place and involve everyone
there.
Books - Dymocks have stripped their shelves for us and this will fill the
front of the space we have. If you want a book this is definitely a place
to come. Some Credit cards accepted.
Please - bring people who want to know about Linux and Open Source
alternatives - but contain your own agenda to keep it simple. I apologize
now if this sounds rather strong. We need to keep it simple for newcomers.
