[wellylug] making a Redhat 9 custom kernel killed pcmcia

Hi,

I run an older version of VMware. It works fine, but needs particular
settings to do with parallel ports in the kernel to use bi-directional
parallel devices (like my printer/scanner).

The stock Redhat 9 kernel doesn't have those settings. No problem, I
configured a kernel off the stock one and changed the one setting for
the parallel port, compiled, and the port works fine.

But pcmcia card support is gone. There are lots of module files in the
correct subdirectory under /lib/modules, but removing or inserting a
card provokes nothing. No messages in /var/log/messages.

And...
[root at ganesha root]# cardctl status
no pcmcia driver in /proc/devices

Does anyone have an idea what might have gone wrong?

Cheers,
Bret
