You are receiving this email because you have participated in the Wellington
Linux User Group mailing list service.

During the past year we have held a succession of workshops, lectures, and
an installfest. We have relocated our meeting venue from Johnsonville to
Wellington central, and an offshoot of enthusiasts in the Hutt Valley have
been meeting there to encourage interest. The Group has invested in a 30Gb
external disk to store distributions on and make available to members to
copy.

It has been a great year for Linux generally with strategic advances in the
world market. On the New Zealand market the NZ Open Source Society has been
quietly establishing itself as a lobby group to government, although much
more support is required there.

So what is this all about?
There has been some concern expressed from time to time that activities of
the LUG are not well coordinated in the following areas:
- Organizing meeting topics and presentations
- A calendar of proposed topics in advance
- meeting notifications
- promotional activities at public events
- printed leaflets and cards
- fund raising and possible spending
- installfest planning and support
- a list of members who may be contacted
More recently there was some talk of formalising the LUG along club lines
with a committee to provide coordination and planning. A draft set of rules
was put together but never circulated properly and the people who
volunteered have not gone further.

This is a simple few questions to you to gauge your reaction to these
concerns. Please answer in-line and forward to my home address: =

General:
1. Should the Wellington Linux Group adopt a basic set of rules and steering
committee? Y/N
(This would mean the LUG can raise and spend money, apply for
grants, and participate in events. The committee
would help plan actions for both meeting venues )

2. Do you want to see a published calendar of topics to be covered by
presenters? Y/N
(Even a couple of months ahead to allow interest to focus at
meetings)

3. Do you think the Group should have a stand at public events for
promotional purposes? Y/N
(for promoting Linux and both meeting venues)

4. Is one installfest a year enough? Y/N
(installfests allow people to experience Linux and have it installed
by people who know most issues)

5. Should leaflets be created and distributed to shops to promote the LUG
and Linux? Y/N
(enable broader public awareness and maybe gain discounts)

Personal:
1. Would you be prepared to pay a membership fee (say $20/year) to support
the LUG? Y/N
(a nominal amount to be used to purchase more disks or membership to
other organisations)

2. Would you put in some time to support LUG activities at public events?
Y/N
(even a couple of hours at a public event minding the stand and
talking to people)

3. Would you be prepared to present your experiences to the meetings? Y/N
(Good or bad - not necessarily a presentation, just a bit of shared
experience)

4. Would you support the LUG by participating on the committee or in an
activity/event? Y/N
(not a difficult task and very little time involved)

5. Are you satisfied with the current venues? Y/N
(apart from parking are these venues satisfactory?)

I will keep all answers in confidence and publish the results in one week's
time.
