Following the survey sent out a week ago I have collated the responses.

There were 11 respondents who offered a range of comments on each
question, and I have summarised these.

General Section
1. Should the Wellington Linux Group adopt a basic set of rules and
steering committee?
(This would mean the LUG can raise and spend money, apply for
grants, and participate in events. The committee would help plan actions
for both meeting venues )
10 people voted YES and one voted NO. General comments were that this
would benefit the club as long as it was kept simple and
straightforward.

2. Do you want to see a published calendar of topics to be covered by
presenters?
(Even a couple of months ahead to allow interest to focus at
meetings).
All 12 respondents voted YES, although some were concerned that this
would be a big ask to create and maintain. However it would generally
add to the interest for meetings if there was a particular emphasis.

3. Do you think the Group should have a stand at public events for
promotional purposes?
(for promoting Linux and both meeting venues)
10 people voted YES and 2 people voted MAYBE. There was more comment
here that this would need targeting and tailoring to specific events and
should be a consistent year-on-year effort.

4. Is one installfest a year enough?
(installfests allow people to experience Linux and have it
installed by people who know most issues)
2 people voted YES, 9 people voted NO and one voted MAYBE. The majority
of comments of those that voted NO were that there should be more than
one installfest per year. However concern over where and how to do these
was raised.

5. Should leaflets be created and distributed to shops to promote the
LUG and Linux?
(enable broader public awareness and maybe gain discounts)
Eleven people voted YES and one MAYBE. The comments included
resurrecting the previous flyer, targeting specific shops (booksotres,
computer shops etc) and so on.

Personal section
1. Would you be prepared to pay a membership fee (say $20/year) to
support the LUG?
(a nominal amount to be used to purchase more disks or
membership to other organisations)
All voted YES. One comment suggested a higher amount would still be
acceptable. Several felt that new people should be allowed in for free
for a number of times rather than forced to join.

2. Would you put in some time to support LUG activities at public
events?
(even a couple of hours at a public event minding the stand and
talking to people)
9 people voted YES and 3 people voted NO. The major concern was that
people were not comfortable if they were left alone to support a stand
or similar. Along with concerns over length of time and day of week.

3. Would you be prepared to present your experiences to the meetings?
(Good or bad - not necessarily a presentation, just a bit of
shared experience)
10 people voted YES and 2 people voted NO. The consistent comment was
that people did not feel comfortable they knew enough to really make a
good talk, but they were prepared to 'give it a go' if encouraged.

4. Would you support the LUG by participating on the committee or in an
activity/event?
(not a difficult task and very little time involved)
9 people voted YES and 3 people voted NO. Of those voting NO there were
excellent reasons. Otherwise very enthusiastic to see this LUG happen.

5. Are you satisfied with the current venues?
(apart from parking are these venues satisfactory?)
9 people voted YES and 3 people voted MAYBE. Noise is a factor in
Wellington some times, and perhaps simple maps could be posted on the
website to help find the places. More advertising was needed, and
meeting reminders could be cross-posted to other events as well.

Thank you all for participating. In my opinion (and I did not vote to
keep the scores fair) this is very positive. Therefore I will be
following this up shortly with some more suggestions I would like your
feedback on. This will include ideas for the venues, website,
promotions, installfests, and much more. With your support this LUG will
become what you want, and be proud to be part of.

Thank you
Colin Klenner
