[wellylug] Nvidia driver problems with Redhat 9

I have just installed Redhat 9 and have installed the NVidia drivers
(via the file NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run downloaded from the
Nvidia website).
The driver works wonderfully  in X and X is very much faster, but
whenever I exit from X I get screen corruption (looks kinda like
colourful static, but not all over the screen) and I cannot get the
console screen back without rebooting.
Can anyone suggest what the problem might be? I've made the Nvidia
recommended changes to the /etc/X11/XF86Config file (but I guess thats
obvious as the driers do work until I exit X).
