Did you install the conexant winmodem drivers?
If not use the command lspci to find out if your modem is HSF or HCF.
You can then go to:
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/
to download a rpm for mandrake 9.1.

You must install the rpm via the terminal as root.

su -
<root password>
cd <where the file is>
rpm -i <modem rpm>

It sometimes takes a while to install. After it's installed, set the
modem to use to /dev/modem.
The only problem is that you will probably not get support for some of
the voice & maybe fax functions....
