One tip from my experience :) once you compiled a good working kernel
on particular box = back-up and keep safe your file
"/usr/src/linux/.config"
(well.... keep it until hardware changes :))
If you later want to upgrade to next release of kernel on the same
hardware - get the source, untar/gzip it, copy this ".config" file
into top level of the kernel source, run "make menuconfig" - and you'll
have all your old settings there. So no need to select your CPU,
to disable all these unused drivers etc.
