[wellylug] Laptop recommendations

Hi all

Having entirely failed to make my viola run linux (see earlier thread
"Kernel Compile - SUCCESS") I'm considering buying a laptop, and so
would be interested in advice, recommendations or experiences for
suitable machines for linux.

I'm thinking of an "entry-level" type machine, but with extra memory
(512MB). Uses include basic conveniences (office, email, internet), plus
html and php/mysql development.

I'm browsing some of the web help, but direct local experience is always
good. A colleague has recently acquired a Toshiba Satellite A10 which
works well except for the built-in modem, for which there appears to be
no linux driver yet. I've also been browsing the Dell site looking at
their Inspiron 1100, for which the helpful sites accessible from
http://www.linux-laptop.net/dell.html are quite encouraging.

If anyone has any advice to offer I'd be grateful for it.

Lyndsay
