Linux has trouble with some USB hardware, esp the ones on older, like
3-4y old mobos. I can only print a photo every second time on mine, the
other half it gets stuck in the USB driver (and with this *&@*#$ cups
you can't even kill it). Check the enclosure on different hardware
(running Linux obviously, you're not interested in whether it works
under M$, which of course it does). No luck -> get a better enclosure
(the old story, really). The idea of a mobile harddisk only works as
far as the box it's connected to has functional USB hard and software.
Same goes for firewire.
