You can always run something like

esdctl off;mplayer -vo sdl blah.avi;esdctl on

which is almost one-command.

esddsp works by intercepting calls to open /dev/dsp and attempting to
emulate the OSS sound interface and then sending all the sound over to
esd.  It doesn't always work very well :-(
