[wellylug] Recommendations for the best linux rescue disk - please

Hi,

Since Knoppix, in my experience only boots about 50% of older PC's can
anyone tell me of a decent rescue cd (or floppy possibly) which will let
me test memory, hard disks as well as repairing an unbootable partition
etc.

Any opinions gratefully received.
