I've used the rescue feature of the RedHat installation CD's a few
times. Use chroot to launch a shell with the correct root mapping then
repair away. It saved me when my glib was corrupted by a dodgey update.
These days I just use knoppix. In fact I've a friend with a busted M$
installation coming around this evening. I'm planning to use knoppix to
scp all his data across to my machine where I'll burn it to CDs for him.
He hasn't seen Linux before and had given up on ever retrieving his
data.
