And I saw similar things with NEC Versa notebooks. There was a BIOS upgrade
to fix the charging problem and also a DOS application that would fully
discharge the battery to allow it to be properly refreshed. Couldn't be done
under Windows as power management would get in the way. It was sometimes
necessary to run the charge-discharge cycle a couple of times. If after that
and the BIOS update there were still battery probs then the battery was
replaced under warranty

I have come across a few compaqs with battery indication problems. Although
I haven't worked on them my guess would be a problem around the battery
management chip/sensing circuits. I had a "MECER" machine in SA, - many
people in the company had - and you could not believe the battery info on
any of those machines.
I also know of one older machine where the owner claims loading
newer/appropriate drivers sorted things out. I did not see this happen, but
the guy (although not a hardware buff), certainly knows how to upgrade his
own machines, so I would not dispute his story.

what sort of battery is it? If the cells are NiCad then you have to
fully discharge them every time to maintain a decent battery life,
otherwise you get poor performance as you experience.
No, it's a Lithium.
