[wellylug] Odd internet (ip-up?) Problems (was: Problems with fetchmail)

Hello again all,

I think my problem is bigger then just fetchmail.

I have had a further 'dig' and play and got the following results:

> Can you resolve mail.araitanga.com and pop3.paradise.net.nz from the
> command line?
>

Yes, using ping and dig come back as working fine.

> If all else fails you could try doing "host resolves" by adding the
> following to your /etc/hosts file:
>
> 66.70.75.100 mail.araitanga.com
> 203.96.152.6 pop3.paradise.net.nz

If I do this fetchmail works perfectly again. However chrony (a program
that syncs the system clock still doesn't).

Chrony may be more useful than fetchmail for tracking my problem down.
If I go into chrony and tell it that I am online it comes back with '501
No such source' (which is funny because they ping ok). If I restart
chrony (from /etc/init.d/chrony restart) I can tell it to go online and
offline and it works perfectly.

The only other things to point are that the scripts in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/
are being run as my resolv.conf file is being backed up and over written
as per the 0dns-up script when I log on and off the internet and that
exim seems to have no trouble sending emails out to mail servers setup
by the name.

I am going to kludge it so that ip-up.d/ tells fetchmail and chrony to
restart on ip-up and this should fix my problems but I would like any
advise as to why so I can be sure nothing else less obvious isn't
working.

As I now have no idea at all what is going wrong I haven;t attached any
error logs but feel free to ask for any addtional information :-)

Thanks again.

Leslie

PS: I have removed whereami but this made no difference so I am putting
it back...
