[wellylug] DSE & Linux

Gidday all....

Decided I'd flick this on to the LUG. Apologies to those who'll get two copies,
one from each list, but I figured the first notice should be to both.

It is an excerpt of a message from a DSE mgr in Auckland, regarding DSE support
for the installfest.

Perhaps, once the 'fest is out of the way, & Jamie B. has done his "What is
Wellylug" presentation & we have Damon's guidelines regarding etiquette, we
could put out a flyer summarising this which DSE could pass on to customers
interested in Linux?

DSE is pretty well committed (due to new licencing issues with an alternative
OS) to using Linux & supporting it's use, and will be promoting it as a viable
alternative. Hopefully WLUG will be able to be involved in this in the Wgtn
region.

This stance from a retailer like DSE could have a major impact on the way the
general public perceive Linux, and it's viability/credibility.

With the interest in the involvement of WLUG in
commercial/political/evangelical roles recently expressed on the lists, I
figured this should be made open for discussion.

If people think it more appropriate that the discussion is restricted to
wlug_org, rather than wellylug, post there instead, or say so, & we'll keep the
org list flowing :-)

Any comments?

Sorry, should have explained that Carl Whiteman is our southern area manager.
Carl is keen to have his Wellington team support Wellington LUG. We would be
particularly interested in looking at some way some of the LUG members could
get
together with our store staff and provide some basic Linux exposure or
training.
Carl's comments were very valid - "everyone knows Microsoft, very few know
Linux". Also, Carl mentioned that from time to time we do run into issues with
customers at store level where they simply do not have the knowledge. In most
of
these issues, customers are happy to wait for our Auckland support office to
get
back to them but it would be nice to be able to direct customers to join LUG or

get help from LUG members.

Ideally, I'd like to think that the DSE retail channel could end up supporting
and being supported by a local LUG. I think this is an ideal opportunity for us
to experiment in the Wellington region and see how DSE and Wellington LUG can
work together for our mutual benefit. Please don't get me wrong, were
definitely not looking to offload Linux problems to LUG's - we are looking at
ways we can help LUG's and draw from their experience and perhaps spark the
Linux bug among a few more DSE staff members.
