I admit I never use distro kernels, as I always roll my own. So while I
accept for some people this seems like an annoyance, it's something I'd
encourage people to do anyway.

Interestingly, I had problems with stereo capture over OSS. It works fine
over a loopback cable, but would produce nothing but mono from the
/dev/dsp the driver creates :(

I did debate this with Gerd, but he was sure it was working okay. Never
did get to the bottom of it, just ended up using a loopback cable (and
then moved, and lost NICAM entirely..)

FWIW, under 2.4.25 with an XP 1800+ CPU, I can encode 352x576 (Half D1) at
full frame rate to 2.2Mbit MPEG-4 with 20% CPU load, under MythTV. It's
worth it to get a decent bit of CPU, makes like much easier. .. Comes out
at 1G/hr and looks pretty good (when the reception is not shite..)
