Mobo problem?  Sounds more and more like a hardware
issue to me anyway.

That might be useful -- can you post it to a web site
somewhere and post the address on this list?

I had DMA errors on a old laptop, and it turned out it
was because I had upgraded the kernel to 2.4.25 and
accepted the default config when compiling, which was
for many of the fancy DMA options to be turned on. 
Recompiling with DMA options turned off did the trick.
 But it was a really ancient laptop (P166).
