You don't need the GUI tools. They are an encumberance and a security
risk. Not to mention resource hogs. Has anyone ever measured how much
resource X soaks up versus everything else? I'd suspect that well over
half is down the GUI blackhole.

When a GUI can pull out the data from a web log, based on maybe three
or four different criteria, and produce a report, all in three or four
lines of shell script, then I might switch to a GUI.

Even Microsoft is swinging back the CLI way, with most of the tools
for its flagship Active Directory coming in command line form and more
of them being added everyday. Many of the configuration and analysis
tools are CLI.

GUIs are useless for ad hoc. You want to analyse the Event Logs on a
Windows system? MS's answer is dump them to a file and run a VB or
Windows Script over it. Want to audit a thousand Windows machines? Run
a WMI script over them.

Cheers,

Cliff
