Well, if you want to spend about twice as much, you can get a Linkcisco
WRT54G, which gives you wireless (which you may not care about), but
also runs Linux. If you run something like OpenWRT on it, then you can
install an SSH server and run iptables and friends on it. Mine even has
joe and screen installed :-)

I have one piece of cisco equipment: a Catalyst 1924something switch; it
cost me $50. But it's old, and noisy, and most of the ports are 10Mbps.
And it does VLAN tagging, which I wanted, but not 802.1q, only a wierd
cisco protocol that nothing supports, which isn't too useful.
