I suppose the real question is how to make the poll transparent so there 
can be no question as to its accuracy.  Perhaps a leaf out of the linux 
book - open source or in this case open ballot: The results of a poll are 
published on the mailing-list with a list of all the voters for and against.
(ie no secret ballots, why would we *need* a secret ballot?)
So people can scrutinize the list and check their ballot was counted properly.
