You can run VNC integrated into your X server - e.g. no separate X
context, and its rather nice to access your linux GUI from a machine
that doesn't have an X server.
X11 forwarding (even with ssh compression) is extremely slow compared to
TightVNC etc. for many apps, so I would certainly not agree with that.
Personally, I am looking forward to seeing NX (nomachine.com) become
more widely used, but I certainly find VNC a useful remote admin tool.
