well, I'm having difficulties with internet now.  

I was signed up with slingshot (bought their CD from the warehouse for 17$), but
the month ran out, and I didn't want to sign up for three. I actually didn't know
for sure the month had run out, as I could still apparently connect, but just
couldn't access anything (including pinging the nameservers), I was only able to
ping the remote end of the ppp connection. 

So I signed up with Orcon, and the same thing happened.  To cut a long story
short, using wvdial (which gives more information about the session than debian's
pon scripts )) and minicom I discovered that Orcon appears to need a login before
starting ppp (and I also discovered that slingshot was indeed rejecting me at
authentication, so that's no longer a mystery).  I made wvdial do this login
thing by telling it to enter the user name at a "login" prompt, and I specified a
couple of "recieve-send" pairs (or whatever they're called) in pppconfig. wvdial
just seemed to get confused after responding to the prompts and start pppd and
hope for the best - leaving me in the same situation as before: being able to
ping the remote end and no more. 

pppd (run by debian's 'pon' script) was a little more explicit. Here's the syslog

but it doesn't like it very much. not 8-bit clean. That's weird. 

Looking on the internet (using windows... (*urk*)... although this of course
means the problem is with linux. Or me.) suggests that this probably means that
somehow this is not the time to start pppd. 

I'll footle along with this a bit more, but surely some of you connect with
orcon. I even remember seeing such email addresses. Is there some trick I'm missing?
