a little more info: 

using minicom, orcon sends a 'login:' followed by a "Password" prompt (you also
see this on wvdial). sending my username and password results in it hanging, you
don't get the ppp gibberish that you're supposed to get. Sending another username
and password has the same result. So it seems as though I'm not sending the
correct username and password, but they're the same as what I'm using in windows. 

I might try sending "lyceum at orcon" or something, perhaps.
