Hey,
First of all, I think we should all recognise how awesome it was of
Colin Klenner (and others) to start the thread on Organising the
WellyLug, and provoking some healthly debate on how to move forward.
Cheers Colin. Hopefully we do some cool things and everyone has fun and
learns something.
Basically the Wellylug needs some people to help with some important
things. We have people that do stuff, and stuff that needs doing. The
stuff and the people may change as appropriate. The important thing is
the tasks at hand - not the people or positions they hold. Having said
that, there are some tasks tied to some people.
These are:
Venue Guy:
Make sure that the venue is good for the wellylug. Make sure that
wellylug is good to the venue. Venue Guy embarrasses and shames people
who are messy etc at the venue. Venue Guy (in association with Welcome
Guy)also does the run down on who is presenting what on the night of
meetings - basically handles the mechanics of the meeting itself.
Nothing too serious.
The venue is currently at Lan Place for as long as Shane Cole is
generous.[EVERYONE remember to always say NICE things about Shane and
Lan Place - they rock. Seriously.].
Welcome Guy:
Welcome Guy looks after people who are new to the LUG, and are trying to
work out how things are run around here - Questions *about* the LUG. The
LUG itself helps with questions about *Linux* etc.
Presentation Guy:
People talk to presentation guy if they want to do a talk on whatever it
is that turns their dial.
Installfest Guys:
InstallFest is a great way to introduce new people to Linux. New people
to Linux is good. InstallFest needs 3 Installfest Guys (with the help of
everyone) to sort out InstallFests. InstallFests are hard work that
needs lots of help. But installfests bring new people to the lug which
is good.
Web Guy: Web Guy makes sure that we're online.
Pen Guy: Someone needs to write these silly notes. And make stupid
jokes.
Everyone: If you feel passionate about something, and you want it to
happen - then do it. Us guys (the organising team) will help you if you
have questions, but remember - you want it - you drive it - and we'll
support you where we can. If someone thinks that having nametags is
important (for example) then they become NameTag guy (not someone else),
and they sort it out.
Basically the idea is to be self starting. There's no point complaining
about why something isn't being done, when you can make it happen
yourself.
OK. There are also immediate tasks we've come up with:
Skills database: Part of the reason that some people are shy to do
presentations is because they think that a) They are not as leet as the
next guy, and b) people might laugh at them. This is not true - We want
the lug to basically be as friendly a place as possible, think of it not
like a presentation, but a chat with your mates about stuff.
Any way Sam Cannell has volunteered to create some php magic
(co-ordinating with Jethro) so people can enter what things they're good
at on the wellylug website. This way we all know who's good at what and
what people might be interested in hearing about.
Presentations (for a start): Sam Sargeant (with Ed Hintz): My big PVR.
Sam Cannell: PHP Magic spells and party tricks. Sam Sargeant: PGP why
and how + keysigning, Jamie Baddeley: VoIP. Michael Dittmer: There's BSD
in that there Mac!
Feel_the_stream!: Jeremy Naylor is going to help the WellyLug put some
selected presentations (i.e those that are OK with being a net
celebrity) online. Jeremy is involved with a seriously cool outfit known
as R2 - who did the Lord of the Rings Premiere online stuff. See here
for more details: http://www.r2.co.nz/ . Pen Guy and Presentation Guy
will help Jeremy.
thursday_night_curry: Jamie Baddeley has volunteered to organise a night
of indian curry madness. Basically we're going to take over a restaurant
and have fun! Stay tuned for more details.
Nametag Guy: Peter_dawson at eagle.co.nz has kindly offered to sort out
nametags. ***EVERYONE*** on the list, please email peter with the
subject of [nametags], with your preferred name in the message. For
those of you who don't do this, we will point and laugh at you at the
next meeting.
Nice Guy will make sure that we don't point and laugh and genuine new
people (somehow) :-) - Thanks Peter for the offer.
list: Brent to organise Ewen to create a mailing list for us guys (the
organising team). All wellylug list members can view the archive of the
mailing list for us guys. (hey it's better than doing cc's etc)
[**anyone** please add anything you want here] Don't post to us guys,
post it to the list. If you want it - you make it happen (t-shirts?)
Currently the people doing stuff for Wellylug are:
Sam Cannell (Presentation Guy)
Tony Wills (Nice Guy)
Michael Dittmer (Install Guy)
Brent Wood (Install Guy)
Jamie Dobbs (Venue Guy)
Chris Hodgetts(Install Guy)
Jamie Baddeley.(Pen Guy)
Jethro Carr (web guy)
This approach to helping the wellylug is reviewed in August 2004.
