Hmm. The baudrate is the speed the computer communicates with the modem,
and the connection speed is the speed that the modem communicates down
your phone line.
Typically you want the baudrate to be much higher.
Run wvdialconf and it will tell you the highest buadrate you can use
safely, as well as a good modem init string.
(i don't use wvdial, but do use the config program because it gives you
lots of useful data --- and even searches for your modem).
