[wellylug] Formalising WellyLUG

Dear Members,
Over the past six months or so there has been discussion about the
relative merits of formalising the Wellington Linux Users Group along
club lines.

What does this mean?
The LUG would adopt a set of rules which it would operate under, and
elect an organising Committee (annually). The Committee would be
responsible for setting up and running events such as club meetings (and
speakers), installfests, and the like.
It is not planned to become an Incorporated Society. This proposal would
not change much of what happens now.

Why should we formalise?
To give more certainty to LUG activities and information.
At present there is no one person or group who you can contact to tell
you what may be planned, who may be doing what, or who has what skills.
Relying on the mailing list is ok but still a bit hit and miss.
When we raise funds from events we need a way to decide where to spend
them, how to avoid tax, and where to store any (limited amounts of)
stuff we may acquire.

Will this cost anything and who pays?
Formalising this way costs nothing. If we Incorporated completely that
would involve costs. But for now we have free venues and donated funds
and materials.

What do I need to do?
Nothing if you do not wish to. Or
Come to the February meetings (Wellington and Hutt) with an open mind
and a copy of the attached Rules. I will try to be at both to allow open
discussion and explain them.

Who decides these Rules?
You - all of you - will decide if these Rules are ok to use. I and
others worked on them to provide the best possible benefits to you, the
members.

If you are ok with these Rules then we can get on to electing a
Committee in a following meeting.

The objective is to provide an LUG offering services to members and the
public, and promote Linux use in the Wellington region more.
