[wellylug] Dumb questions 101 - How to compile a more modern Kernel for Debian

The default Debian3.0r1 Kernel is rather old and I need iptables support
in the kernel for a task that I am working on.
The only issue is that I have never been able to successfully compile and
install an up-to-date kernel for Debian. Can someone either give me some
very simple step by step instructions or point me at some easily
understood documentation for a Debian newbie.
