I think the parent post sums up my feelings on the subject very well.
All the issues which the formalisation is intended to address can be
addressed more directly through discussion of those issues.

As someone else has mentioned, you might want to look at www.backports.org
It's a very nice way of having some important packages more up to date.
I installed postfix 2.0 from it only last night.

Having almost always used debian, I've been shocked several times by the
space used in a basic install of distros like mandrake.
