I've become somewhat worried at the number of recent comparisons between
wellylug and Linux / OSS advocacy groups such as NZOSS.

The two groups serve different purposes, and I for one would be keen to
keep it that way.

Personally I dislike the rabidly zealous tone that open source
evangelism groups seem to acquire, and as such I have steered clear of
any involvement with NZOSS.

If this is the direction that Wellylug is destined to take, then so be
it. But I feel that this is a decision that needs to be made now,
clearly and decisively.

My main problem with advocacy groups in general is that most of the
members feel very passionately that everybody should be using Linux
(insert other open-source project where applicable), and that anybody
using Microsoft products, or any other propietary software, should be
hung drawn and quartered.

Having more than once been on the receiving end of rants from these
types, I feel that I can speak from experience. Linux is right for some
people, and Windows is right for some people. Can't we all just get
along?

In any case, back to the topic at hand. Personally, I am dead against
turning wellylug into an advocacy/evangelism group, and feel that it
should be kept as the name suggests - a linux user group, for linux
users to meet up with each other.

If a Wellington OSS advocacy group is what some people want, then
there's no reason not to set one up. However I do feel that should this
situation arise, there definately need to be two distinct groups.
