Check out my BLFS install article, I've got the dep's for evolution
listed there. Get the BLFS book for a howto install.

The new 2.6.0 kernel now runs your hard disk at it's top performance.
The older kernels ran the drives at the default slow speed, to granante
support with all systems.

It decreased the system boot time of my machine by 10 seconds!
