[wellylug] Trouble playing audio CDs

Hi All

When I play audio CDs on my laptop (Acer Aspire 1350) no sound comes 
out.  

Sound works OK otherwise - MP3s etc work fine and I've been having fun 
playing with Festival recently.

The CD drive works fine too - no problem with data CDs and audio CDs 
work fine under Windows XP.

The GNOME cd player app can read CDs and download the appropriate track 
listings.  Pressing the play button gives no errors but also no sound.  
The command-line 'cdplay' tool also gives no errors but no sound.

I have successfully ripped tracks to OGGs and played them but even this
hardened Linux geek would have to admit that's a roundabout way of 
doing it.

Using the GNOME volume control/mixer, I've confirmed that the CD 
channel is not muted and the volume is not turned down.

Any ideas?
