Hmm, sounds like a classic case of the 'disconnected audio cable'. On
desktop PC's the people that assemble the PC sometimes forget to connect
the analog audio cable from the CD ROM drive to the sound card (MBoard
if onboard). I don't know how this applies to laptops, but just in case
it _is_ the problem, here is something you can try (I'm not in my Linux
boot at the moment so my exact menu items etc. may be wrong):
- Load XMMS
- Go to preferences -> plugin preferences
- Go to properties of cd audio plugin
- Set audio type to 'digital audio extraction' instead of 'analog'
- Mount a music cd
- Still in the cd audio plugin preferences, choose 'check drive' button
- If it's happy, then go to your playlist -> add directory and add
'/mnt/cdrom' (or whatever your cd mount point is)
If you now hear sound, then it means your audio cable is not connected.
