I bought a 3CRSHPW196 from Ascent a few months back - it cost $130 or
so. Unfortunately it appears to have been removed from their product
listing, but if you can find one elsewhere I strongly recommend it.
While the feature set of the driver isn't perfect (it doesn't support
Monitor mode, which means you can't use kismet or airsnort), the basic
functionality is rock solid. Having never set up an 802.11 card in
Linux before, I had no problems getting it working.
The driver itself is included in the 2.6 (possibly recent 2.4 as well)
kernel source, and as Tony mentioned you need to download the firmware.
I did a writeup of it on linuxhardware.co.nz:

I haven't had time to get my two wireless cards working properly under
Debian, but they are supported out of the box on other distros, and
are widely reported to work with just about any setup (there have been
some reports of flaky behaviour with the 196 card):
* 3COM 3CRWE154G72 (802.11b/g)
* 3COM 3CRSHPW196 (802.11b)
Both need binary firmware, which can be downloaded for free
(www.prism54.org and www.thekelleys.org.uk respectively).
I got mine from www.ascent.co.nz, but lest this be construed as
advertising, I'm not recommending you buy from them rather than anyone
else.
