[wellylug] samba read only question

Hi Sam
You are a life saver.
I have a customer for whom this has become a real issue (they are in the
habit of making the maps they produce read only after the project is
complete to stop accidental changes). Never thought about it when I replaced
their old nt server with a Linux box.
They have one W98 box - presumably it wont be able to set security
permissions but will be limited to restrictions set by other (NT/XP)
workstations.(I will try this part out soon)
Thanks again for the prompt answer.
cheers
Mark

Linux has no equivalent of the legacy read only / system / hidden /
archive attributes in Windows. The "right" way to configure access to
files by modifying the filesystem permissions on the files themselves on
the Linux system.
If you open the properties on a file or folder on a Samba share on an NT
machine, the Security tab will also allow you to modify permissions.
Any changes you make here will cause chmod / chown to be run on the
files.

This might seem a bit of a basic question but hopefully someone can shed
some light on it..
If you are using windows pc's to access files on a Linux box via samba
and
you right click on a file and select properties you can make the file
read
only. Next time you check the read only attribute it is unset again. Is
there no way to change the read only attribute and a samba shared file
from
a windows pc without resorting to bodges like read only directories and
different user access levels?
