Thanks to Damon, Geln and Jethro for your suggestions to the problem
above: ie: # reboot; Cntr/Alt Esc and Cntr/Alt Del.  What these are
designed to do is reboot.  However, since as far as I can tell, the
complete OS has loaded and has stopped at the login to the KDE GUI, and
I can access the command line as either myself or root as user, is it
possible via the command line to complete the login to the GUI?

Or is this a recognised fault with my nVidia graphics card as you
suggested Damon?  Incidentally, I do not seem to have this problem on
those rare occasions when I boot up into Windoze

Any thoughs gratefully
