I think you might be confusing the topic.

As far as I know Sun never developed Linux for Sparc as a commercial 
product but there were always engineers playing with it (you can't stop 
engineers playing with stuff).

What I think you may have heard was that Sun annouced they were not 
going to release Solaris 9 for x86 to which there was a huge community 
uproar. Jonathon Schwartz was not in charge when that decision was made 
and immediately rectified the situation when he became head of software 
(and he is now head of everything!).
