And once the machine is up and running it pays to have it set permanently
as well... via YaST->Hardware->IDE DMA Mode (or edit /etc/sysconfig/ide if
you prefer). Pretty much essential if it's a DVD drive and you actually
want to play DVD's.

I picked this up off another list today:

"During install switch to a free console and speed up the cdrom with
"hdparm
-c1 -d1 /dev/hdc" this will speed up the installation a lot."
The person who posted this was not sure when dma was set during install and
when not and this would manually set it.

Also noted that depending on the machine a GUI install can be up to twice
as
fast - contrary to what you would expect.
