I picked this up off another list today:

"During install switch to a free console and speed up the cdrom with "hdparm
-c1 -d1 /dev/hdc" this will speed up the installation a lot."
The person who posted this was not sure when dma was set during install and
when not and this would manually set it.

Also noted that depending on the machine a GUI install can be up to twice as
fast - contrary to what you would expect.
