I have two suggestions. First, do you have all the fonts you need
installed correctly?  I've never used X.org, but I have had trouble with
kdm, xfs and font paths before.  Second, is it possible gdm is passing
additional arguments to X that you don't know about?  I've seen that too,
but cannot remember if it was gdm or kdm.  Try checking the gdm config
files under /etc for any options that can pass command-line arguments to
x.
