Some questions:

1) What's the output from the following commands,
before you have plugged in the handheld:
ls /proc/bus/usb
lsmod (you probably need to be root for that one)

2) What's the output of the same command after the
handheld is plugged in (and turned on)?

3) What's the make and model of your Acer handheld?

1 and 2 will reveal whether or not your system is
detecting the device and loading the right usb drivers
(or any drivers at all). To remove all doubt, they
are best attempted following a hard reset with no Acer
plugged in.

3 would make a Google search much easier.

I've found this guide to be useful in the past:
http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/p13.html

This thread might also provide some clues, although
less likely:

Cheers
Tony
