OK Folks,

On Behalf of the InstallFest planning group, here is an update on where things
are at. Read it and weep.

I know this will probably generate a bit of heat on this list. If anyone feels really strongly
about any issues, then please, come to the next planning meeting, and we'll get it sorted out.

:-)

#Main Messages:
InstallFest2004 will not fall at the feet of a few. If there is not enough support/help/assistance etc in critical
areas, InstalFest2004 won't happen. Simple.

InstallFest2004 is about introducing new people to Linux and the WellyLug. It's is not about showing off your
flash machine. We're setting up shop for the day. Lot's of people using Linux and being WellyLug members is a good thing.

This year is going to be a big one. Interest in a Linux way of thinking grows every day. We expect to do twice the
volume on the last installfest.

#Call For Help:

WE NEED:
InstallFest2004 needs Distro Team Leaders (DTL) . Basically we need volunteers to take charge of each Distro,
act as the central person for that distro on the day. DTL should be 'expert' in the chosen distro.

So far we have these nominees (who need to accept/reject nominations etc)
Sam Cannell : Debian DTL (nominated by Jamie)
Damon Lynch: Mandrake DTL (nominated by Brent)
Fedora Core 1: Nominations/Volunteers requested.

Live CD specialist support

WE NEED:
A modem expert - someone to own modem issues. We also need driver/hardware expert/s. Some who is the master of dual booting
(The all powerful Partition Master) would also be great. These people each need to come up with a magic CD of tricks (tm)

WE NEED:
A Presentations Wrangler (yes you will be able to put this in your CV afterwards). Someone to co-ordinate the
presentations, make sure everyone is on time, ready etc.
Someone to deal with MIA presenters. Someone to make sure that it's not a complete bloody circus. Also someone to make
sure the presenters are fed and watered etc.

Also Needed:
People to help the above distro team leaders on the day.
People to stick up info sheets around their parts of Wgtn a week or so prior to the 'fest.
People to tell us their radio/newspaper/media contacts to help with marketing.
Someone to go through recent NZ PC World & photocopy recent appropriate Linux
articles (40 copies?), plus general positive articles etc.

#DISTROS:

The basic policy is essentially “top 5” according to distrowatch.com, with some input from the
InstallFest team. Those who feel strongly about this are encouraged to turn up to a InstalFest2004
planning meeting and get involved and help.

3 main WLUG supported distros, plus a Debian & Mandrake based LiveCD.

Mandrake 9.2
Fedora core 1
Debian 3.0 r2
Knoppix 3.4
PCLinuxOS 2004

Other Distros:
Others are welcome to do their own distros, but these are outside main activity (i.e organise it yourself). WLUG
supports diversity, but InstallFest is focussed on introducing new users to Linux, therefore we must focus on
'popular' distros. If you feel strongly about this either way, come to the next InstalFest2004 planning meeting.
Otherwise zipit. Please. We are prepared to review the distro list prior to 1st April.

Lycoris will be available, from "An Inside Job Ltd" (aka Michael Dittmer)

#CD's
Supplied and Printed with Inspire & WLUG logos by Inspire.net (quantities to be confirmed)
Mandrake 20x 3cd sets
Debian 5x 1 or 3cds to be decided (DTL decision required) (mainly using apt server)
Fedora 10x 3CD? sets (DTL decision required)
Knoppix 30x
PCLinuxOS 15x

There but not printed:
CD with asstd modem/graphics drivers to help with installs

#All installs will include:
OpenOffice, Mozilla, The GIMP, XMMS, & a video player (DTL to decide appropriate to each platform).
Likely standard windowing package is KDE (due to similarities to Windows – easier to change to etc)

DSE Linux & Open Source CD's are planned to give away. These have been mastered & are being pressed
at present. They should be in DSE shops in a couple of weeks.

#Sponsors:
(people to say nice things about)
Silicon: Venue, maybe some printing/copying, demo PC for Dymocks
Dymocks: books at installfest, shopfront display, brochures
Inspire.Net: CD's
DSE: CD's & promotion/handouts at local shops

#Marketing:
(Jamie to coordinate and ensure consistent message)

Handouts, A5 or A4 depending on printing sponsorship
600 to DSE to distribute from local shops
200 to Dymocks to go with live display
50 for WLUG members to post in local shops/malls, etc

General Propaganda etc.
WLUG web site to have installfest info, links to sponsors sites, presentation listing/registration.
Registrations via email. Need to beg Jethro to help :-)

#Presentations:
We plan to run 20 minute presentations every 1/2hr in Silicons upstairs room.
These will be by registration as numbers are limited (30ish people for each one).
