Doing a quick google, Jabber apparently speaks XML,
with messages bodies themselves in plain text, with an
optional XHTML body.  So, as you say, <br /> might
work.  Using <p></p> tags could also be an option.

I'm interested to know what the jabber.pl script looks
like.  Is there an explicit option to interpret the
string as XHTML?
